Even small pollution threatens the lungs

Exposure to air pollution could accelerate the aging of the lungs, at least one study found.

In Europe, three out of four city dwellers live in neighborhoods that do not comply with the directives of the World Health Organization (WHO) in terms of the level of fine particles emitted, in particular by exhaust gases and domestic heating.

In a sample of Britons aged 40 to 69, the prevalence of chronic lung disease was even higher in subjects in neighborhoods where WHO guidelines were exceeded than in subjects exposed to second-hand tobacco smoke. "Exposure to air pollution also appears to accelerate the aging of the lungs," said Dany Doiron of the McGill University Health Center in Montreal, the study's lead author.
